May 03, 2023Collectors can now own match-worn shirts from the world of women’s football in celebration of International Women’s Day - VAVEL International
MatchWornShirt has launched its largest-ever women’s football auction series to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day.
The company has been working with clubs and charities in the men’s game to allow collectors to own a piece of valued memorabilia, while simultaneously raising money for foundations and charities, such as the Royal British Legion during Remembrance weekend.
Demand for women’s football memorabilia has soared in the last few years, with the campaign allowing an opportunity for more fans to own a piece of memorabilia from their favourite players.
Portland Thorns FC forward Sophia Smith’s match-worn shirt against Kansas City was sold at €9,523, while Arsenal forward Alessia Russo’s shirt in their 6-2 away win over Leicester City Women last season raised €6,526 for charity.
Over 70 teams will be participating in the initiative, with match-worn shirts on offer from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Olympique Lyon, AC Milan and more.
The campaign aligns with MatchWornShirt’s mission to to elevate the visibility of women’s football, which has grown significantly as evidenced by participation and TV viewership figures.
BBC reported that over 21 million people in the United Kingdom tuned into the 2023 Women’s World Cup tournament, with a peak audience of 12 million people watching the final between England and Spain. Numbers are expected to keep rising for the 2025 Women’s European Championships in Switzerland this summer.
Naivasha Oakes, Head of Partnerships at MatchWornShirt, commented: "There’s no better moment than International Women’s Day to bring fans and collectors closer to some of the world’s top women’s teams and footballing icons. We’re seeing an ever-increasing demand for women’s football shirts across our auctions, so we’re proud to have worked with our partners to deliver this record-breaking opportunity for fans of the women’s game to get their hands on some incredible, unique shirts.”
Shirts from key fixtures including the North London Derby between Spurs and Arsenal, Chelsea vs West Ham and Fulham vs Milwall will be auctioned across March and listed on both MatchWornShirt’s web and app-based platforms.
